ALTERNATIVE COMMUNITY—BELOVED COMMUNITY
With Social Activist Anita Howard and Meetinghouse Director Deborah Rundlett
What does it mean to be a just and loving community? In the 1950s-’60s Martin Luther King, Jr. championed social action aimed at creating The Beloved Community, a global community of caring where poverty, hunger, and injustice are no more. In the wake of the COVID pandemic and post-George Floyd era, the structure of community is being challenged and forged anew. This immersion explores what it means to be a beloved community today, and steps we might take to create it.
About the Leaders
ANITA HOWARD grew up at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement, with her family home and church often serving as a center for movement strategy sessions due to her father’s leadership of the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
Her passion for social justice leadership and change is a direct outgrowth of early involvement in social action that changed American history, leading to various professional roles in university administration (at Radcliffe, Harvard, and Tufts Universities in Boston, MA) and organizational consulting (co-founder, J. Howard & Associates, Inc. and The Efficacy Institute in Boston, MA; consultant for The Algebra Project, Benjamin Banneker Charter School, and other social change projects in Boston and beyond). She currently serves as an adjunct professor and executive coach at the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University. Her teaching and research center on intentional change, leadership coaching, emotional and social intelligence, and pro-social behavior/ generative engagement.
