SUMMARY:Linda Pickwick: Still Life in Watercolors
DESCRIPTION:On display in The Meetinghouse Gallery \nStill Life in Watercolors\nWatercolor Paintings by Linda Pickwick\n  \nJuly 6 – August 31\, 2025\nAn opening reception will be held Sunday\, July 6\, 2025 from 2-4 pm. \nThe Gallery is open Tuesdays – Sundays 8:00 am – 4:00 pm for viewing. (Closed Mondays). \n  \n  \nArtist’s Biography\nLinda Pickwick is a lifelong artist based in Newton\, Connecticut. Her passion for art began early\, with a love for drawing that blossomed during her school years. In high school and college\, foundational art classes sparked a special interest in portraiture\, setting the stage for her creative pursuits. \nAfter graduating and spending several years in the workforce\, Linda married and started a family. As her children grew older\, she returned to art with renewed enthusiasm. Sharing a love for antiques with her husband\, she developed a deep interest in 19th-century decorative arts. Exploring this style\, she began experimenting with Theorem painting\, primitive folk art\, and decorative painting on wood and tin—accessible and inspiring mediums that fueled her creativity. \nLinda became an active member of the National Society of Decorative Painting and participated in craft fairs\, selling her hand-painted wooden pieces. In 1993\, her work received national recognition when she won first place in a painting competition hosted by Decorative Woodcrafts\, a Better Homes and Gardens publication. \nHer artistic journey evolved from acrylics on canvas to the expressive medium of watercolor. Studying under Carol Hubbard\, A.W.S.\, of Monroe\, Connecticut\, Linda embraced a layered watercolor technique that lends depth and vibrancy to her work. She has since exhibited in local art shows\, earning multiple awards for her paintings. \nIn addition to her studio work\, Linda has also shared her talents through faux painting\, including murals and trompe l’oeil\, transforming private homes with her artistic touch. \nToday\, she continues to paint in both acrylic and watercolor\, always eager to begin her next creative endeavor.

SUMMARY:Rochambeau - America’s Forgotten French Founding Father - with the Ridgefield Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:Presented in collaboration with The Ridgefield Historical Society \n\nThe Ridgefield Historical Society and The Meetinghouse in Ridgebury proudly present historian Keith Marshall Jones III who will give the illustrated presentation\, Rochambeau – America’s Forgotten French Founding Father\, on Tuesday\, July 1\, 2025\, at 6:30pm at The Meetinghouse at 602 Ridgebury Road\, Ridgefield\, CT. Held in honor of the 300th anniversary of Rochambeau’s birth (July 1\, 1725)\, the presentation will be followed by a reception. \nTickets are limited\, non-refundable\, and expected to sell out quickly. Admission is $15 for members of the Ridgefield Historical Society and The Meetinghouse in Ridgebury\, and $20 for those who aren’t yet members. \nPurchase Tickets Here\n  \nOn July 1\, 1781\, French Lieutenant General Jean-Baptiste-Donatien de Vimeur\, Comte de Rochambeau\, celebrated his 56th birthday right here in Ridgefield. While his superbly equipped and immaculately clad 4\,700-man army camped in Ridgebury Parish\, en route to Yorktown to join General George Washington’s forces and secure American independence\, the Comte dined at Ensign Samuel Keeler’s nearby tavern. The following morning\, one of his regimental chaplains conducted Connecticut’s first inland Catholic Mass. \nJoin Keith Marshall Jones III on July 1 to commemorate Rochambeau’s birthday visit and explore the story of his army’s two-day stay in Ridgefield. Learn why French money\, arms\, and manpower paved the way for American independence. Discover how it was Rochambeau\, not General George Washington\, who devised the bold stale-mate-breaking strategy that led to the decisive victory at Yorktown\, and how he later narrowly escaped the guillotine during the French Revolution as thanks for his efforts. \n\nKeith Marshall Jones III\, Founding President of the Ridgefield Historical Society\, is the author of THE BATTLE OF RIDGEFIELD\, Benedict Arnold\, the Patriot Militia and the Surprising 1777 Battle that Galvanized Revolutionary Connecticut (2024). Other books include: JOHN LAURANCE\, the Immigrant Founding Father America Never Knew (awarded the American Philosophical Society’s 2019 “Publication of the Year”); CONGRESS AS MY GOVERNMENT\, Chief Justice John Marshall in the War for Independence (2008); Farmers Against the Crown (2002); and The Farms of Farmingville (2001). He lives in New York City and Connecticut. \nFor more information contact: info@ridgfieldhistoricalsociety.org or 203-438-5821

SUMMARY:Photography - Beyond the Real
DESCRIPTION:On display in The Meetinghouse Gallery \nPhotography – Beyond the Real\nphotographs by Thomas Carroll\n  \nThe Gallery is open Tuesdays – Sundays 8:00 am – 4:00 pm for viewing. (Closed Mondays). \nAn opening reception was held Sunday\, April 6 from 2-4 pm. \n  \nArtist’s Statement\nI am an experimental photographer. My art is influenced by my experience as a student filmmaker at Binghamton University\, NY\, 1971-1974. I studied avant-garde cinema under Ken Jacobs\, Larry Gottheim\, Peter Kubelka\, Nicolas Ray\, Jonas Mekas\, Hollis Frampton\, Stan Brakhage and other visiting filmmakers and artists. I learned the Art of Seeing and developed an appreciation for arranging shapes in space and time.\nThe kinetic energy I see from the play of light interacting with surfaces attracts my imagination with the possibilities for making art. Many of the photographs I take become a collection of images which I save and later overlay in the camera. The result of the marriage of photographs creates a montage that transcends each of the individual photographs. The images become fused into a new reality… an image the naked eye did not see. It is a fantasy for the imagination. \nThe joy for me in this production is to see the unseen and perhaps discover a deeper meaning and sensuality that arises form a subconscious awareness and reveals something about our time\, our past and perhaps our future. I aspire to include elements of mystery\, magic\, truth\, beauty and existentialism in my art. The development of something original that may possibly add to the vocabulary of art and photography motivates me to push the boundaries of the medium. \nI began by double exposing 35mm film in 1979. I would rewind the film in the camera and shoot again. It was often hit or miss. In 2015 I started using a Nikon digital camera with an overlay feature. This camera allows me to collect images and later overlay them in the camera to create a unique image. The overlay and other digital variables expand the experimental possibilities of photography. I use Adobe Lightroom to attain the color\, clarity\, illumination and structure that I want for the final image \nI am influenced by many artists of many styles and schools of art. I am especially inspired by Man Ray’s vision of experimental photography as well as the artistic freedom he derived from his friendship with Marcel DuChamp and his association in Paris with the artists of Dada\, Futurism and Surrealism. Some other important influences for my work are perhaps Fernand Leger\, Antoni Gaudi\, Pablo Picasso\, Wassily Kandinsky\, Jackson Pollock\, choreographer George Balanchine and many movie directors including Federico Fellini\, Georges Melies\, Eric von Stroheim\, Busby Berkeley\, Luis Bunuel\, Salvador Dali and others. My approach to the artistic process   is also influenced by the philosophy of Carl Jung and his writings about art and the “Collective Subconscious.” \nView more of Thomas Carroll’s work on Instagram\n
