SUMMARY:The Underground Railroad in Ridgefield: A Hidden Piece of Black History\, Revealed
DESCRIPTION:Presented in collaboration with The Ridgefield Historical Society \n\nThe Ridgefield Historical Society and The Meetinghouse in Ridgebury proudly present The Underground Railroad in Ridgefield: A hidden piece of Black history\, revealed. \nRidgefield Town Historian Jack Sanders will be joined on Saturday\, Feb. 21\, by Ira Joe Fisher for a conversation centered around Sanders’ book\, Uncle Ned’s Mountain\, Three centuries of African Americans — free and enslaved — in a small New England town. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing at the program. The Black History Month event is presented by the Ridgefield Historical Society and The Meetinghouse in Ridgebury and is part of both organizations’ commemoration of the 250th anniversary of America in 2026. \nSeveral years ago\, Mr. Sanders discovered and wrote about the existence of a station on the Underground Railroad that had been quietly maintained by Ned and Betsy Armstrong\, who were well-known in the Ridgebury community. As free Blacks raising their family in a small compound off what is now called Ned’s Mountain Road\, the Armstrongs risked the harsh penalties of the Fugitive Slave Acts to provide a temporary haven for those who were fleeing southern enslavement. \nIra Joe Fisher\, an acclaimed broadcaster and Ridgefield Poet Laureate\, is a lively interlocutor\, as he and Mr. Sanders demonstrated in their last Ridgefield Historical Society program together\, a discussion of Mr. Sanders’ book\, Here Lyes Ye Body\, in October at Lounsbury House. \nThe Saturday\, Feb. 21\, conversation (snow date Feb. 28) will take place at 2 p.m. at The Meetinghouse (Ridgebury Congregational Church\, 605 Ridgebury Road)\, a short distance north of where the Armstrongs once lived and a short distance south of where they are buried in Ridgebury Cemetery. The hour-long program will touch on many other aspects of the lives of Black Americans in Ridgefield\, from the earliest days of the town to present day. \nA reception will follow at Shields Hall\, across Ridgebury Road from the church; parking is on that side of the road (some accessible parking is available on Canterbury Lane). \nTickets are limited\, nonrefundable\, and $20 per person ($15 for members of the Ridgefield Historical Society and The Meetinghouse) available online here. \n  \nGet Tickets\n  \nFor more information contact: info@ridgfieldhistoricalsociety.org or 203-438-5821

SUMMARY:Sacred Awareness: Nurturing Your Spiritual Core with Meredith Caplan
DESCRIPTION:Sacred Awareness: Nurturing Your Spiritual Core with Meredith Caplan\nWednesday\, March 4\n10:45 am – 12:30 pm\nUpstairs\, Shield’s Hall\nCost: Donations Accepted\n  \nWe are born with an innate spirituality. It is a human capacity that\, when nurtured\, deepens resilience\, creativity\, discernment\, and your knowing about belonging. When left unattended\, this inner capacity lies dormant\, leaving us more susceptible to disconnection\, overwhelm\, and a diminished sense of well-being. This is an introductory workshop to discuss how to awaken and strengthen your spiritual core through deliberate awareness and practice. Drawing on ancient wisdom and contemporary research\, you are guided to experience Sacred Presence: the felt sense of being connected to yourself\, to others\, and to the greater whole that holds and informs your life. Through reflection\, dialogue\, and experiential exercises\, you begin to tap into more fully to your inner guidance\, to synchronicity and to the unseen intelligence woven throughout your lived experience. This workshop offers both inspiration and practical tools to reconnect with your innate spirituality\, allowing you to embody a deeper sense of personal power\, clarity\, and intention in your everyday life. \nCost: This is a donation-based program. \n  \nAbout the Instructor \nMeredith Caplan works with individuals and groups to develop\, strengthen and promote spiritual awareness and practices as a direct connection with sacred guidance and in alignment with our innate\, deep sense of knowing. \nMeredith has a B.A. from Yale University and a J.D. from Boston University School of Law. She worked as: a human rights lawyer; a women’s rights advocate; an adjunct professor; and the Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Spirituality Mind Body Institute\, Teachers College\, Columbia University. \n  \nNOTE: Program time is 10:45 am – 12:30 pm. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:2026 Book Club: "Conversations with Myself" by Nelson Mandela
DESCRIPTION:2026 Meetinghouse Book Club\nSmall and Revolutionary: Stories about Community and Transformative Change\nRead along with us!\n  \nSaturday\, February 28\, 2026 from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm\nFebruary’s book: Conversations with Myself by Nelson Mandela\n  \nJoin us in Shield’s Hall for our FREE monthly book club! Tickets available below. Please get a ticket to register for the event. \n  \nAbout this book: \nNelson Mandela is widely considered to be one of the most inspiring and iconic figures of our age. Now\, after a lifetime of taking pen to paper to record thoughts and events\, hardships and victories\, he has bestowed his entire extant personal papers\, which offer an unprecedented insight into his remarkable life. \nA singular international publishing event\, Conversations with Myself draws on Mandela’s personal archive of never-before-seen materials to offer unique access to the private world of an incomparable world leader. Journals kept on the run during the anti-apartheid struggle of the early 1960s; diaries and draft letters written in Robben Island and other South African prisons during his twenty-seven years of incarceration; notebooks from the postapartheid transition; private recorded conversations; speeches and correspondence written during his presidency―a historic collection of documents archived at the Nelson Mandela Foundation is brought together into a sweeping narrative of great immediacy and stunning power. An intimate journey from Mandela’s first stirrings of political consciousness to his galvanizing role on the world stage\, Conversations with Myself illuminates a heroic life forged on the front lines of the struggle for freedom and justice. \nWhile other books have recounted Mandela’s life from the vantage of the present\, Conversations with Myself allows\, for the first time\, unhindered insight into the human side of the icon.

He can be reached through his website: randycarboni.com \n  \nArtist’s Statement\nArt has always been a way to keep harmony in my life. I am always learning and exploring with my art as that keeps me and my viewer interested and excited for the next piece. \nWhen working in watercolor I start each piece with an ink drawing using an eyedropper. Colors are applied with a brush and manipulated with various items found in the studio. When painting in oil\, a palette knife is used. This keeps the painting vibrant with color and expressive with emotion.

SUMMARY:Noise & Blessings: Live Music At The Meetinghouse
DESCRIPTION:March 6 @ 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm \nComing up at The Meetinghouse – Karen Dazzler\, Death Rattled\, and XUR: \nMax Caulkins is an experimental musician and game developer. With a mix of melodic playing and spacious effects (now with beats)\, Max aims to create landscapes that listeners can meditate to and get lost in\, drawing them into a world of color and texture. She can be found performing around New York\, either on sax or keys or some combination of the two\, usually bringing her strange electronic noise bending machine (aka laptop). \nDeath Rattled uses all forms of media to create distorted\, glitched out collages of sight\, sound\, taste\, touch\, and feel. They love exploring the assembling\, juxtaposition\, and disfiguration of symbols and their meanings. When everything is on the table\, nothing is too strange to move the heart. \nThe project is led by Manuel J. Perez III (MJPIII)\, an interdisciplinary artist and experimental performer based out of the northeastern USA. \n& XUR\, the local band. \nFriday\, 3/6/26\nDoors open at 6\, music from 7-10. \nTickets $10 online\, $12 at the door.
