SUMMARY:Everything Under the Sun: Cyanotype and Lumen Prints by Fruma Markowitz | Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:On display in The Meetinghouse Gallery \nEverything Under the Sun: Cyanotype and Lumen Prints by Fruma Markowitz\nOctober 18 – November 22\, 2026\n  \nOpening Reception:\nSunday\, October 18\, 2026 from 2-4 pm in the downstairs gallery.\nThe Gallery is open Tuesdays – Sundays 8:00 am – 4:00 pm for viewing. (Closed Mondays). \n  \nArtist’s Statement\nEverything Under The Sun is my first solo show at The Meetinghouse. I’m showing a collection of cyanotype and lumen prints\, most of which were created during my 2022 Artist Residency at the Weir Farm National Park\, in Wilton\, CT.  While there\, I created a visual diary by making one lumen print per day\, and a collection of cyanotype prints using the many native wildflowers and invasive plants growing at the farm. I also photographed John Weir’s barn studio and home\, with the intention of one day creating a hand-made artist book\, combining his work and mine as two artists having a relationship engaged with an identical landscape\, albeit separated by both process and time. Everything Under The Sun is the commencement of this work. It is the ecological foundation upon which more complex images will follow. \n\n \n \n \n \n #20\n \n \n \n \n \n #16\n \n \n \n \n \n #10\n \n \n \n \n \n #2\n \n \n \nWhat are you looking at? \nCyanotype is a non-toxic photographic process that uses a mixture of two iron salts\, potassium ferricyanide and ferric ammonium citrate\, to create an emulsion that is sensitive to UV light. The prints are made by laying objects\, in this case botanical cuttings\, on paper painted with the cyanotype solution\, covered with a sheet of glass\, and placed in the sun for about 10-15 minutes. They are then washed in water\, dried\, and the results are what you see here. \nLumen prints are made in a similar fashion\, but rather than mixing any chemicals\, the artist uses old-fashioned analog black and white darkroom paper as the substrate. Botanicals are laid on the paper and held in place with the same sheet of glass\, exposed in the sun\, resulting in very colorful and unexpected patterns. The variation in color is caused by the way a certain brand of darkroom paper has been manufactured\, combined with the natural chemicals secreted by the botanic cuttings when they heat up in the sun. \n  \nAbout the Artist \nFruma Markowitz’s photography practice focuses on historical\, experimental\, and hand-made processes\, with an emphasis on cyanotype and lumen photography\, textile-based mixed-media collage\, and\, most recently\, hand-made artist photobooks. Family life\, womanhood\, cultural histories with shared legacies\, and environmental concerns are where she mostly draws inspiration for making images. \nFruma exhibits her work in local galleries near her home base in Black Rock\, CT\, as well as in national and international venues.  Locally she belongs to the Artists’ Collective of Westport and New England Bookmakers Association. She has won recognition for her work from the Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers as well as full-portfolio publication and review of her work in DekUnu Arts (2023)\, FLOAT Magazine (2024)\, and Lenscratch (Oct. 2024). In July 2025\, she won the Arthur Griffin Legacy Award at the Griffin Museum Juried Members Exhibition. \nFruma has taught photography to women in crisis at Project Return Home in Westport and to cancer survivors at The Creative Center in NYC\, and\, more recently\, at Five Points Art Center and her private home studio. In July\, 2025\, Fruma led two workshops at the Experimental PhotoFest in Barcelona\, Spain. \nFruma was a member of the first graduating class (1984) at the Bezalel Academy of Art & Design in Jerusalem\, Israel\, where she earned a BFA in photography and was the recipient of the Agfa Award\, the Jerusalem Student Award and numerous merit scholarships.

SUMMARY:Poets & Prophets - A Formational Journey
DESCRIPTION:The Meetinghouse | Shields Hall Gallery – 602 Ridgebury Road\, Ridgefield\, CT\nStarts October 9\, 2026—10:30am (for full schedule see Journey Itinerary) \nFacilitated by Deborah Rundlett and Anne Elmendorf\nRSVP Deborah@Meetinghouse.life\n  \nDo you feel it? \nAn inescapable sense that you can no longer simply carry on as before. A quiet insistence that the wisdom you’ve spent a lifetime gathering is meant for something more than the roles that have defined you\, even the roles that you have loved? \nThis feeling rarely arrives all at once. More often it gathers slowly: the shape of your days shifting\, the weight of leadership easing\, the question of what comes next after decades of building and proving—and beneath it\, a hunger to give back in ways that matter differently now. \nEvery life reaches a moment when the work that once organized everything is no longer enough to organize everything. When competence and career alone cannot carry the weight of what’s being asked next. When the hunger presses for another way of being. This is not a stepping away—it is a threshold. \nPoets & Prophets is for those beginning to look past the shape of their life as it has been to risk letting go in order to step into a deeper way of being\, belonging\, and becoming. \n  \nPoet and Prophet are not roles or personality types. They are capacities of the soul. \n\nThe Poet listens beneath the noise—reclaiming memory\, meaning\, and identity beneath decades of performance and productivity.\nThe Prophet discerns misalignment and speaks courageously on behalf of what wants to be born—calling us toward coherence\, justice\, and wholeness\, even now\, even here.\n\nHeld together\, they root your gathered experience in depth and whatever comes next in imagination and responsibility. \nAcross a fall season of formation\, this cohort will guide you through three inner postures for crossing well—humility\, wisdom\, and integrity—and open with a guided threshold practice: naming what feels unfinished\, what no longer needs carrying\, and what is quietly insistent as you consider how to give back. \nWelcome to the path of Poets & Prophets. The crossing has already begun. \nThe Meetinghouse | Shields Hall Gallery – 602 Ridgebury Road\, Ridgefield\, CT\nStarts October 9\, 2026—10:30am (for full schedule see Journey Itinerary) \nFacilitated by Deborah Rundlett and Anne Elmendorf\nRSVP Deborah@Meetinghouse.life

SUMMARY:Wisdom After Hours: Be a Kind Human | A Conversation with Bob Martinsen
DESCRIPTION:At the heart of it all is a simple but urgent invitation: Be a Kind Human. \nThis is the theme of our new Wisdom After Hours series\, beginning Sunday\, October 11\, at 2:00 p.m. in Shield’s Hall. Each month\, we will welcome thoughtful leaders from across generations and disciplines to share the wisdom they have gathered along the way. \nOur inaugural guest will be Bob Martinsen\, who\, at 92 years young\, will reflect on the Four Essential Things that have guided his life and leadership—including the enduring importance of integrity. Come ready for a meaningful conversation\, an opportunity to learn from a remarkable life and\, perhaps\, a little wisdom to carry into your own. \nPlease register at the link below so we can set up accordingly. \nRegister Here\n  \n\nWisdom After Hours\nConversations on Being a Kind Human \nBe a kind human. Four simple words. But what does that look like? What does it mean to be earth-formed\, kin to one another\, compassionate by nature? \nThis season’s Wisdom After Hours is where we test that claim out loud\, in person\, after the workday ends. One Sunday afternoon a month\, a local leader joins us — not as an expert with answers\, but as a fellow traveler through the same three movements that quietly organize every formed life: \n\nBeing — Who are we\, before what we do or achieve?\nBelonging — Whose are we\, and how do our wounds and our wondering become the ground of wholeness?\nBecoming — What is life asking of us now\, and what might we have to let go of to answer it?\n\nThese aren’t abstractions. They’re the questions our guests have actually lived — in classrooms\, clinics\, city hall\, small businesses\, sanctuaries — wherever leading well has meant crossing a threshold that couldn’t be crossed by working harder or knowing more. \n

SUMMARY:Bill Gore: The Saugatuck Cosmology | Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:On display in The Meetinghouse Gallery \nThe Saugatuck Cosmology\nArtwork by Bill Gore\nOn Display: September 6 – October 11\, 2026\n  \nOpening Reception:\nSunday\, September 6\, 2026 from 2-4 pm in the downstairs gallery.\nThe Gallery is open Tuesdays – Sundays 8:00 am – 4:00 pm for viewing. (Closed Mondays). \n  \nArtist’s Statement\nOver time the intelligence of the New England landscape has taken hold of my image making. I photograph the land and layer images in a virtual studio to search for connections between literal representation\, memory\, and imagination. \nI began by photographing the nearby Saugatuck River valley during numerous walks along the banks and over the woodland trails. The camera images provided a real-time record of this intersection of nature and man\, and I turned to digital methods as an avenue into deep-time explorations of the “more-than-human” intelligence of the river. The images that the camera saw passed into virtual space\, something like a digital bardo\, and mixed with the abstract expression of memory and sensory experience. From my process came a collection of layered photographs that gave visual form to my perceptions of the democratic life-forces of the waters that nurture all that lives along the riverbanks. \n

SUMMARY:How to Get Rich: Intro to Personal Finance | A NextStep Business Program
DESCRIPTION:Coming this August!\nHow to Get Rich: Intro to Personal Finance | A NextStep Business Program\nAugust 4\, 6\, 11\, 13\, 18\, and 20 from 12 pm – 4 pm.\nAll dates are individual\, so families may sign up for only one\, not all sessions.\n\n\nSign Up Here\n\n\nHow to Get Rich: Intro to Personal Finance is a one-day financial literacy camp created and taught by two local high school students. The program is designed to introduce younger students to the core principles of personal finance\, investing\, and money management through interactive lessons\, real-world examples\, and hands-on activities.\nThe camp was created after recognizing that many students receive little formal education about managing money\, despite these skills being essential throughout life. Throughout the day\, students learn how money works\, the differences between spending\, saving\, and investing\, and the habits that help people build long-term wealth. They also explore practical ways to earn money\, develop smart financial habits\, and begin thinking like long-term investors. \nThe program emphasizes participation\, critical thinking\, and real-world decision-making. Students collaborate with their peers while applying financial concepts to realistic scenarios\, helping them build confidence in making informed money decisions from a young age. \nThe camp concludes with the MoneyLife Game\, an interactive investing and personal finance simulation where teams manage a budget\, respond to unexpected financial events\, and make investment decisions over multiple rounds. By the end of the program\, students leave with a practical understanding of personal finance\, a take-home financial “cheat sheet\,” and actionable ideas they can use to start building healthy financial habits and earning money throughout the summer. \nHunter Sucato and Danny Tiktin are students at Ridgefield High School with a shared interest in business\, entrepreneurship\, and leadership. Both are involved in business-related activities at school\, including DECA and business classes\, where they gain experience in areas such as operations\, marketing\, and strategy. They co-created NextStep to give younger students the opportunity to learn real-world business skills before entering high school. They hope to continue pursuing business and entrepreneurship in the future through higher education and their careers. \nDanny is involved in many business classes\, exploring leadership\, entrepreneurship\, and international business. Hunter plays an active role as DECA’s VP of Outreach and has competed internationally representing the RHS School Store.

SUMMARY:Commemorative Oak Planting
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 18\, 2026\n10:00 am\n\nCharles De Wolf Brownell\, Charter Oak\, 1857\, oil on canvas – Connecticut Museum of Culture and History \nWe will be planting an oak tree to commemorate America250 and the role the Charter Oak played in our history\, as well as the role oaks play in nature. Come for the blessing and planting of our commemorative oak tree! All are welcome. \n\nWith the recent birthday of the U.S.A.\, our American history has been looked at considerably. Connecticut’s own history predates that of the U.S.\, and involves a white oak tree\, more famously referred to as the Charter Oak. It begins in 1662 when a royal charter was given to Connecticut by King Charles II\, allowing the colony self-governance. When James II ascended the throne twenty-five years later\, he revoked the charter in an effort to create the Dominion of New England. The king sent Sir Edmond Andros with armed forces to revoke the charter in 1687. There was debate between Andros and Governor Robert Treat over the charter. As the story goes\, and this is where there is no official documentation\, the debate went on for several hours when suddenly all of the candles went out. Once they were relit\, the charter that had been sitting on the table between the men was gone. Captain Joseph Wadworth is credited with stealing the charter and stashing it in a large hollow of a white oak tree on the nearby Wyllys estate. While Andros was unsuccessful at obtaining the charter\, Connecticut was forced into the Dominion of New England anyway. When William and Mary ascended the throne in 1689\, they restored many of the freedoms of the charter\, which served as the state’s constitution until 1818. The “Charter Oak” fell in a lightning storm on August 21\, 1856. A funeral and other remembrances were held for the tree\, which was said to be 500 years old and 21 feet in circumference. The wood from the tree was used for many things\, including the Charter Oak Chair that sits in the state’s Senate Chamber. Because of the role of the Charter Oak\, the white oak is Connecticut’s state tree. \nEcologically\, oaks are one of the most important trees a property can have. The many varieties of oaks found across North America support more life forms than any other genus of tree on the continent. The white oak alone is the host for over 100 moth and butterfly species. Their canopies are open enough to allow sunlight and water to reach the ground and are the nesting sites for the cerulean warbler. The acorns they produce are an important food source for deer and turkeys\, among other animals. Every few years\, oaks of different species across great distances coordinate to produce a mast event. When trees have a mast event\, they produce a huge number of seeds (for oaks this means acorns). It is unknown why trees do this\, but animal populations boom as a result. Our region has several types of native oaks beyond the white oak (Quercus alba)\, including the swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor)\,  scarlet oak (Quercus coccinea)\, the scrub oak (Quercus ilicifolia)\, and the northern red oak (Quercus rubra). \nIn celebration of America’s 250th birthday\, and in remembrance of the role the white oak has played in our own history\, we will be planting and blessing a commemorative white oak on The Meetinghouse campus on Saturday\, July 18th at 10:00. Come join us for the celebration of both history and nature! \nSources used for this: \nhttps://www.bbg.org/article/the_mysteries_of_masting_in_trees\nhttps://ctforestry-cahnr.media.uconn.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/3131/2023/10/OakNotes_v2.pdf\nhttps://connecticuthistory.org/the-legend-of-the-charter-oak/\nhttps://portal.ct.gov/About/State-Symbols/The-State-Tree

SUMMARY:Rori Shapiro: Ridgebury In Retrospective | Art Show
DESCRIPTION:On display in The Meetinghouse Gallery \nRidgebury in Retrospective\nArt by Rori Shapiro\nJuly 12 – August 30\, 2026\nThe Gallery is open Tuesdays – Sundays 8:00 am – 4:00 pm for viewing. (Closed Mondays). \n  \nARTIST’S BIOGRAPHY\nBeing born and raised in Ridgefield\, CT my love for art and history both started at Scotland Elementary School. My fourth grade teacher Mrs. McNamara nee Cemprola\, and my special education teacher Ms. Patzold. They nurtured my love for Ridgefield’s history and supported my ego as an artist. \nI graduated from Ridgefield High School\, and I continued my love of art and history at the Savannah College of Art and Design and graduated with a BFA in Sequential Art and a minor in Art History. I then travelled “across the pond\,” to pursue a degree in Sound Design and Popular Music at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. After playing the world famous Cavern Club\, the Jacaranda\, BBC2’s Songwriter’s Platform with my band ‘Rori and the Renegades’\, and hanging with Sir Paul\, I finally made my way back to Ridgefield\, Ridgebury to be exact. \nSince that time I’ve worked in every elementary school in Ridgefield as a para professional\, substitute teacher and long-term substitute art teacher. I also taught upper school art at Ridgefield Academy.  I released my first children’s book\, “Mayor Maynot and the Case of the Missing Speech” in 2005. My first album “Head Games” in 2007 and my second album “Wrong Side of Right” in 2013. \nIn all those years since my elementary school days\, my love for drawing and need for acquiring Ridgebury history has only strengthened and flourished.  I am currently working on a book about Ridgebury and its deep and multi-faceted history.
