Clear the Clutter, Protect the Planet

Safe & Free Hazardous Waste Disposal in 2025

If you were to look in your garage, your basement, or under your kitchen sink, there is probably a good chance you would find chemicals that you no longer use. Things like paints, cleaning products, glues, and car maintenance products can accumulate in corners and cabinets in our homes. Disposing of these chemicals improperly has the potential to pollute our air, soil, and water.

Fortunately, the Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority (HRRA) holds Household Hazardous Waste collection days during the warmer parts of the year where they will take our unwanted chemicals.

For 2025, the Household Hazardous Waste collection days and locations are:

  • April 5 – Public Works Facility, Danbury
  • May 10 – Public Works Facility, Newtown
  • June 21 – Bethel High School, Bethel
  • September 6 – Public Works Facility, Weston
  • October 4 – John Pettibone School, New Milford
  • November 1 – Brookfield High School, Brookfield

Here are the key details to know:

  1. You may attend any or all these collection days, provided you live in an HRRA town (Bethel, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Danbury, Kent, New Fairfield, New Milford, Newtown, Redding, Ridgefield, Roxbury, Sherman, Weston, and Wilton).
  2. You will have to show ID to prove your residency, but there is no cost.
  3. Collection times start at 9:00 a.m. and run until 1:00 or 2:00 p.m.
  4. Each facility does a very good job of moving people through but there may be a wait time.
  5. Once it is time to unload, you get to stay in your car and the workers will do all the unloading from the back of your car.

For a list of what HRRA will and will not take on Household Hazardous Waste Days, exact times, and addresses of the sites, visit the HHRA website.

You could even make this disposal of chemicals a practice of gratefulness. Grateful for sitting in line and having time to talk with your carmate or listen to music or enjoy some solitude, grateful for the workers unloading your car, grateful for the proper disposal of the chemicals, and grateful those chemicals are out of your home.

Whether you make this a mindfulness practice or just want to get stuff out of your home, take advantage of the Household Hazardous Waste Days of 2025.

Here’s to a cleaner, safer home!
