I have always loved to travel. Be it a day trip or transatlantic—by foot, by car, by train, or by plane—even the anticipation fills me with quiet excitement. Throughout our marriage, Dick and I have often said that the journey itself is our home. It has carried us across the country from East Coast to West Coast and back again, with seasons in between. And yet, for all the miles traveled, the most significant journey has not been geographical. It has been formational.
The Formational Journey is a path of inner and outer becoming—a way of growing into the kind of person and leader the world now requires. It is for those who sense that strategies alone are not enough. For those who want their lives and leadership to arise from deeper ground. For those who seek real change—in themselves, their communities, and the wider world.
At its heart, this journey invites two movements at once:
- inward toward identity, healing, and purpose
- outward toward wise action, systems change, and collective flourishing
Leadership, in this understanding, is not merely a role or a skillset. It is a way of being. A lifelong practice of becoming more grounded, more connected, more awake.
Each of us must choose how we will travel. Some paths feel direct. Others wander. Often, we lose our way before we are found. But always the journey turns us inward first—not to escape the world, but to return to it more alive, more compassionate, more courageous.
Within each of us lives a quiet yearning to make a difference. To offer our one life in service of something larger than ourselves. The Formational Journey simply asks: Will you allow yourself to be formed? Will you risk becoming who you truly are?
This is the path of the Poet and the Prophet—those who cultivate depth of soul and clarity of action, who listen for what is emerging, and who help communities cross thresholds toward wholeness.
The journey awaits.
