Taking a Mental Break

The nature of our world has changed over the last 15 years. Now that we carry small computers/televisions/non-stop news outlets in our pockets, there is more than enough information at our fingertips. It’s overwhelming on a good day. But with much upheaval in the world and our own country? It can be paralyzing. That’s why it is critical to set some new habits and boundaries with how and when we consume the information.

Recently I had to do a big clean up after an ice storm knocked down many of our branches. It was dirty work (lots of sap) and I had to put my phone away to keep it dry and clean. But that meant that I was outside, doing yard work without being able to constantly check my phone to see if I missed a text/email/breaking news. And it felt SO good. I felt like I had mentally reset. I cleared my mind.

It reminded me of how I managed those first few months of the pandemic. I was outside mowing the lawn, gardening, anything that I could do to get me away from my phone.

There will always be time to catch up on current affairs. But setting aside time to take a break from the constant information is critical. It’s self-preservation. It means that you are mentally giving yourself a break, creating some space and clarity so that you can better manage through the constant flux of information.

So whether it’s getting on your yoga mat, walking our labyrinth or on the soon to be created path to our pond, we strongly encourage you to set time aside on a weekly basis (if not daily) to take those mental breaks.
