Winter has arrived.
There’s a quiet about it. Weather and temperatures can discourage engagement by keeping folks inside. Yet, there’s quite a bit of excitement and revelry starting in February that encourages connection and prepares us for an reemergence with the flowers in Spring.
First announced as Negro History Week in 1926, Black History Month encourages the celebration and intentional acknowledgement of the experiences and contributions of persons of African descent in the United States. This year marks 100 years since its inception.
The Super Bowl features the New England Patriots on February 8th, with its commercials and halftime show often an inspiration for community dialogue. Even Valentine’s Day celebrates the love not only between two people, but among groups of friends and family too. A new moon arrives on February 17th, along with a lunar new year, starting the year of the horse.
The Meetinghouse book club will meet again on Saturday, 2/28 at 11am to discuss Nelson Mandela’s Conversations with Myself, continuing the “Small and Revolutionary” series. In the spirit of shared learning and accessibility, we’ve made the book club free, and we’d love to welcome new voices into the room. Copies of the book are available through many local libraries, and all are welcome whether you’ve read every page or are simply coming to listen.
