Cultivating Wellbeing
Every time we get on our mats, we have the opportunity to cultivate a sense of wellbeing which we can take out into the world with us. Maybe you feel calmer, more focused, stronger, or even just at peace after class. When we bring that into the rest of our day, we can help others feel that way too. We become a little less reactive, which is something we could all use these days.
It’s like a domino effect: if we are angry, anxious and stressed, we tend to carry that energy with us wherever we go. Think about the last time you found yourself in a situation where the other person came off as rude. They may have taken it out on you, but the root cause of their feelings started way before they came into contact with you. And in turn, you may have taken on some of their negative energy and brought it into your life.
Likewise, if you encounter someone that is kind, you tend to take that energy back into your life.
It’s not easy to stay at peace, and in fact, it’s almost certain you won’t. Experiencing different feelings is normal. It’s what we do with those feelings that impacts our health (physical, mental, emotional) and those around us, both familiar and not.
Yoga is a practice of stilling the mind and making decisions every step of the way to dwell in our feeling of discomfort or to work through it. Right now, the world makes me feel anxious, sad, frustrated, and angry. But because I’ve been practicing yoga for some time now, I know that I can’t dwell on those feelings. Sometimes it’s really hard to not hang out in them, but every time I get on my mat and practice centering my attention on my breath (a challenge for even me!), little by little, I begin to cultivate a sense of wellbeing. It helps me focus more clearly on what I can and cannot control, how best to use my energy, and I feel stronger and more at peace.
